Train Driver Experiences

All our packages are designed to offer a very unique experience which will be remembered for years to come.

Our 15″ gauge railway follows the route of the historic Cornwall Minerals Railway, later to become the GWR Newquay to Chacewater Branchline. Enjoy spectacular views as you drive through the Cornish Countryside and under Metha Bridge.

Duration: up to 1.5 hours

Operating on just over a mile of the original track bed of the Newquay – Chacewater railway, enjoy the journey from the unique perspective of the driving seat as you take control of your very own private narrow gauge train on one of our fifteen-inch gauge steam or diesel locomotives.

Under the guidance of one of our experienced drivers you will have the opportunity to drive two round trips, experiencing the changing gradients, passing under tunnels and bridges from both the present day Lappa Valley and the days of the former full size railway that once operated here. There’s plenty of time for a photograph at various points throughout the experience and up to four guests can ride on the train that you are driving!

Our narrow gauge locomotives offer the opportunity for participants to learn the skills of locomotive handling in a far more relaxed environment than what you may find from ther full size counterparts.

Please note that all participants have to comply with and sign the Indemnity form.

Cost: £20 (plus standard admission)

Availability: Selected days that Ellie/City of Derby/City of Truro are in service.

Duration: One round trip.

Join the driver for a ride on the footplate of one of our narrow gauge steam or diesel locomotives, where you are able to get a real unique perspective of the railway, passing under bridges and tunnels up and down the steep gradients on our fifteen inch gauge railway.

Please note that this is designed for people who are planning to spend the day with us and use the other activities, so you will need to purchase standard admission as well.
