East Wheal Rose Mine 175th Anniversary Commemoration

Lappa Valley are proud to be apart of the event commemorating 175 years since the great mining disaster at East Wheal Rose which took the lives of 39 men and boys.

The management team at Lappa Valley would like to invite those living in the villiage of St Newlyn East and those with an interest in the East Wheal Rose mine to a special commemoration evening on Friday 9th July to unveil a memorial to those 39 men and boys who lost their lives in one of Cornwall’s worst mining disasters.

Entry for this special evening is free of charge and will include a ride on the train to get to and from the site at East Wheal Rose where our host, Chris Blount will introduce an evening of music, dance and of course, the unveiling. A full programme of the evening will be released on here very soon.

Trains to get to the event will be every 20 minutes from 4.00pm until 6.00pm and trains home will depart from approx 7.15pm


6.30pm – Chris Blount to welcome everyone and introduce the evening

6.35pm – Oll an Gwella Singers

6.45pm – Dance performance – ‘An Keynres’ – “The Torrent” choreographed by Pip Robbins

6.55pm – Oll an Gwella Singers followed by poetry reading

7.10pm – Unveiling of stone and a few words from Chris Blount and Barry West

7.15pm – Trains return to Benny Halt and the car park.
